Physical Fitness

Public Safety

There are five physical fitness components that will be measured at the beginning and at the end of the Basic Recruit Training Program: vertical jump; sit ups; push ups, 300 meter sprint; 1.5 mile run.

Public Safety studies have shown there are several physical tasks that are job related.  These tasks are necessary to perform essential functions of the job. There is ample data to document that physical fitness components are the underlying and predictive factors for performing task such as: sustained pursuit; sprints; lifting and carrying; dragging/pulling and pushing and more.  Today's training standards throughout Florida are such that agencies actually use physical fitness as a hiring standard.

In the Academy, there are no physical fitness entry requirements beyond the successful completion of the initial physical exam completed during the application process.  That said, prospective students should be prepared to enter the Basic Recruit Academy at a fitness level which will provide him or her with the potential for successful completion of all of the physical fitness activities.

There are several ways to prepare yourself for the physical fitness tests.  A well balanced diet and regular exercise is a great start!

Running is a great way to exercise and keep fit. But running is not without risks.  Remember to pace yourself and watch out for sudden injuries.  Most mild injuries can be treated with a combination of stretching and strengthening exercises.  Selecting the right shoes are also important for long term injury reduction, better performance, and overall comfort.  Most area running store associates can provide helpful, low cost, assistance.

Remember to stay hydrated.  Did you know that you can lose as much as 1 to 2 quarts of fluid through perspiration during 1 hour of exercise in the heat?  Your body requires water to function correctly, especially while you're exercising.
